  • Attend a Support and Recovery Group

This activity aims to increase your understanding of the role that support and recovery groups play in mental health and substance use recovery. You will attend a support or recovery group meeting (either in person or virtually) and reflect on your observations. Then, you will participate in a group discussion board to share your insights and engage with your peers.

  • Steps to Complete:
    • Select a Group:
      • Choose a support or recovery group to attend. Examples include Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), or another relevant group (e.g., Grief Support, Overeaters Anonymous).
      • You may attend either an in-person meeting or an online/virtual meeting.
      • Ensure the group aligns with the focus of mental health, addiction, or emotional support and is open to observers or newcomers.
      • You can use the link below to help locate a meeting. Ensure when looking at AA/NA meetings that they are listed as “open” meetings

    • Attend the Group:
      • Attend at least one full session of the group. Be respectful of the group’s culture and confidentiality norms.
      • Observe the group’s structure, communication styles, and the role of peer support.
      • Focus on how the group fosters a sense of community, accountability, and emotional resilience.
      • While attending the meeting, remember that confidentiality is a cornerstone of these groups. You may take notes for personal reflection, but do not record or identify individuals in your observations or reflections.
    • Reflection Questions: After attending the group, reflect on the following:
      • What was the overall tone and atmosphere of the meeting?
      • How did group members support each other emotionally and mentally?
      • What role did the group leader/facilitator play (if any)?
      • Were there any key concepts or approaches to recovery you noticed?
      • How did this experience influence your perspective on peer support and recovery?
