The purpose of this writing assignment is to give you an opportunity to apply all of the principles you have learned in modules 4-8 to a real-world situation. You are to think critically and clearly, and explain the concepts from the course that apply, and analyze how they all work together. The more ideas from the course that you can apply to the situation, the more likely it is that you understand the concepts, and will do well in the course. You are also required to do a small amount of independent research to find resources to support your paper. The “ASU Library” link in the navigation menu is a good place to start.

After completing all of the modules in Module 4 (Unit 13), write an essay on the following:
Imagine you are a defense attorney whose job is to argue an appeal for your client before the U.S. Supreme Court. Your client is an African American male who was sentenced to death for a capital crime. The appeal is based on racial discrimination in sentencing.
Discuss how you may use the victim-offender dyad and differences between disparity and discrimination to make your case.
Additionally, find a case that has been overturned on the basis of racial discrimination and summarize it.
