Overview

The purpose of creating a timeline and semester goals is to help guide students during the practicum experience. A timeline with a goal and short-term objectives is a great opportunity to understand exactly what is needed to reach the finish line. The goal and objectives should be developed with the practicum supervisor. The timeline allows you to visualize the completion of an event and make adjustments as plans change.

Instructions

Goals are broad statements and objectives are specific statements that you can measure and evaluate. Typically, you will have one goal with 3-5 objectives. Objectives should follow a SMART format:

  • Specific
  • Measurable w/Measurement
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time-Oriented

When creating your objectives start to consider what deliverables you will develop during the practicum experience and how the practicum work can feed into your applied doctoral project.

A timeline is a visual tool that outlines a sequence of events for a specific time period. There are many different types of timelines you can explore. A list is provided below but you can explore others as well.  Consider what tasks you will need to complete at the practicum site to reach your objectives.

You may format the timeline and goals in any way that works best for your needs. The following elements are required:
