Plant Survival Strategies in Cold and Light-Limited Environments: Essays on Winter Worlds and the Quest for Sunlight

Choose two (2) of the topics below and write an essay of 800-1000 words on each topic. You will have to write very concisely. Scientific content, organization, clarity, grammar, and spelling will all count. You must use and identify specific examples from the course videos and PDF’s in your answers. Use the numbered sub-topics provided in the exam question below to organize each of your essays into clearly defined sections.

There is also a short extra-credit question provided at end of the exam if you wish to include it. The extra-credit is worth 0.5% of the course grade.

Use the Turnitin link on the course webpage to submit your exam. Submitted exams must be MS Word docs or pdf’s. Submit one doc or pdf with both essays (and the extra credit) clearly labeled with your names and student number. Label each question. Completed exam must be submitted online

This is an open book, open note exam. However, you must work on this independently and all work must be your own. Be very careful not to copy text verbatim from any source, including other students, or to otherwise plagiarize. Do not use direct quotes from other sources. Do not use AI such as ChatGPT to compose your answers. We will use Turnitin and other resources to check every exam for plagiarism and use of AI generated text. UCLA rules require that any evidence of non-independent work and plagiarism that the Instructor or TA suspect be sent directly to the Dean of Students.

Your answers must include references to specific examples from the course videos and PDF’s and you must cite those sources. For example – “Much of California’s current grasslands are dominated by invasive annual grasses from genera such as Bromus. These grasses grow and produce seeds in the wet winter and then die in the dry summer – depending upon their seeds to produce the next generation of grass plants (Module 4 Unit 3).”

“Winter Worlds” 1. Explain how cold temperatures and freezing temperatures impact the functioning and health of plants. 2. Identify, and describe and contrast the general climate and the vegetation physiognomy and structure of the two northernmost/coldest biomes we have studied. 3. For each of these two biomes outline the important adaptations that allow plants to survive despite cold temperatures.

“The Quest for Sunlight” 1. Explain the role of sunlight in the functioning of plants. 2. Outline how the quest to reach the sunlight is reflected in the vegetation physiognomy and structure of the tropical rainforest and 3. Outline some of the important/interesting growth traits and life histories exhibited by rainforest plants related to the quest for sunlight.
