Learning Styles and Learning Theories

Discussion Week 1: Learning Styles and Learning Theories

In our discussion this week, we will look at how people learn and the theories that help guide us in teaching and learning environments. After completing the assigned reading for the week, respond to the following points.  It is helpful if you use headings to organize your posts.

Need answer to this question?

  • Think about all of the learning experiences you have had and briefly describe one experience where you felt like you learned a lot and had a positive experience.
  • Consider the learning theories that are outlined in your text or in the web page provided below.  Discuss one theory that you think might have fit with the learning experience you described above. Give a brief outline of the theory and provide a rationale for why the theory fits. You can also go to http://www.learning-theories.com/ to see more or expanded descriptions of theories.
  • People prefer to learn in different ways; this is referred to as a learning style. Click Learning Style Survey http://www.personal.psu.edu/bxb11/LSI/LSI.htm to link to a “Learning Styles Inventory”.  Once you have taken the inventory, discuss which learning style you were, whether you think the result is accurate.
  • Explore whether having information about a person’s learning style would be useful, and how would you integrate this information into patient teaching.

Respond to 2 or more postings of your colleagues, addressing such things as:

  • Do you agree with the concepts expressed?
  • Is there something that needs clarification?
  • Can you support what your colleague posted?
  • Challenge your colleague to a different view or deeper insight.
