1. SUBJECT: Use a word or phrase to define the topic.
2. BACKGROUND. Briefly describe the situation to enable the reader to grasp information in context. Don’t overshadow facts treated in the body of the paper. List references bearing on the issue. After covering the background, there can be an additional entry covering the “Purpose” of the information paper. This entry is typically used if someone has requested the information. For this writing assignment, “Purpose” is omitted.

3. CONCLUSION. In a sentence or two, state the bottom line or your interpretation of the information. Do not make recommendations – use a decision paper for that.
4. DISCUSSION
(a) Use an information paper:
- To provide background and status of an action
- To provide information on request
- As backup information at briefings
- To discuss implications of facts, make interpretations, offer opinions, note opposition, emerging problems, or matters for coordination
(b) For informal use, prepare an information paper on 8-1/2 by 11 inch, plain bond paper. For information sent outside your headquarters, a formal format is more appropriate.
(c) Present information in a sequence the reader most likely expects or readily understands.
(d) The salient points should relate to the subject and be short, logically arranged, concise statements (complete sentences).
(e) Limit content to a single subject, written on a single page. Provide only enough detail for information to stand alone.
(f) If coordination is involved, show it at bottom of page. This is not required for this assignment.
(g) POC. List point of contact, office code, telephone, and e-mail. This is not required for this assignment. Student name and date will be contained in the footer below.
(h) Typically, formatting will include a unit’s letterhead and sender’s symbols (Standard Subject Identification Code, originator’s code, and date) at the top of the page. However, these elements have been removed for the purposes of this assignment.
Process Statement
Students will describe how they created their work using a one or two sentence process statement. There is no wrong way to write a process statement. It is a simple, honest statement that reflects how the learner did or did not reference outside sources in a writing assignment.
Examples:
• I researched my topic in the library and found two articles. The writing is something I came up with. The EWSDEP Writing Center helped me support my thesis.
• I used ChatGPT to help make an outline of the essay, but the rest of the essay I wrote myself. I used Grammarly to help with proofreading.
• This is a reflection paper, so all the ideas came from my head.
• I did not use Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) for this assignment.
