Discussion: Week 2
How does health promotion relate to environments? This week’s discussion focuses on the topic of environments, both healthy and unhealthy, and their effect upon health. In order to live a healthy life, our environments must also be healthy, that is often not the reality. Our world has much potential for creating positive conditions for healthy living, but there are also many environmental issues that negatively impact health. Some of these can be perceived as hazards that affect both short and long term health.
This week we will discuss potential health hazards in our environment, how these can impact the promotion of health and healthy living, the connection between chronic diseases and unhealthy environments, and the need to measure and evaluate health outcomes related to the environment. In Week 1 you chose from a list of potential environmental conditions that can influence health. Perhaps this condition also exists in your own community, so it could be personally relevant. Use this topic as a basis for the following discussion questions.
Focusing on your chosen topic, respond to the following:

- Have you ever experienced this issue personally or professionally?
- What kind of program would you suggest to alleviate the impact upon health?
- What individual changes in behavior would you suggest for those individuals exposed to this environmental issue?

Remember the basic rules of posting:
1. You must include citations to support what you write and they must be in APA format. At least one should be another source besides your texts and readings, and should follow the basic rules of not more than 5 years old and be peer-reviewed sources.
2. Emotion and intent do not clearly come through this medium.
3. Be courteous, non-judgmental, and supportive, even when you disagree.
4. Posting must have substance: “I agree” or “Good posting” are examples of postings that do not meet this criteria and will not count as a required posting.
5. Always check the grading rubric as you reply to ensure you meet all criterion and earn all the points possible.
Note: As always, all discussion postings must be in APA format, as much as possible. You must include citations to support what you write and they must be in APA format. At least one should be another source besides your texts and readings, and should follow the basic rules of not more than 5 years old and be peer-reviewed sources.
On question #1 that I underline, the environmental problem that I choose, “FOOD BORNE ILLNESS”, I hope is okay because there was none available.
Top Ten DQ Tips
10. Write at least 3-4 sentences for each required rubric element.
9. Use references no older than five years old unless it is a classic (i.e. Florence Nightingale).
8. Separate paragraphs with appropriate spacing and headings.
7. Use spellcheck. Read your post out loud before you submit to make sure words have not been omitted or confused such as ‘their’ for ‘there’. I expect
professionalism in your use of proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc. even though this isn’t an English course.
6. Review problem areas and apply corrections each successive week related to the grading feedback provided to after each week’s DQ posts.
5. Review formatting citations and direct quotes in Chapter 6 of the APA Manual.
4. Review formatting references from journals, books, and electronic sources in Chapter 7 of the APA Manual. All journal references must have either a URL or a DOI (pages 187-192 in the APA Manual).
-
- The DOI starts with the number 10 (10.1037/a0026704). Resnick Library gives students the following information: doi:http://ezproxy.delhi.edu:2870/10.1037/a0026704 This is not correct formatting for composing a doi as this directs the reader to the Resnick Library. It is also not the retrieval URL.
- The retrieval URL that should be provided is the journal home page or specific article page. The best way to find the URL is to Google the journal.
- The “7p” content that is now provided to you within a reference with the page numbers is a page count and should NOT be included in your APA formatting of references.
3. Respond to your colleagues in your thread when a question is posted to you and addressing your colleagues by name.
2. Be in class a minimum of three nonconsecutive days every week.
