An elevator speech is a short message or commercial about yourself or an issue of importance. It is referred to as an elevator speech to represent the time it might take to ride an elevator from the bottom of a building to the top floor. The main purpose is to promote interest in your topic and encourage further conversation about the topic. Being able to present a succinct and compelling speech is an important skill for nursing leaders to develop. As nursing leaders, you may have to present yourself or topic of interest quickly during meetings, networking events, and at professional events.
For this assignment, choose an issue pertinent to nurse educators, nurse administrators, or advanced nursing practice. Go to your state nurses’ association and look at the legislative/advocacy issues that they have on their agenda for ideas on current issues or you can go to your national organization (e.g. NLN for Nurse Educators, AANP for NPs, AANA for CRNAs, NACNS for CNSs, etc.) for ideas.
