You MUST adhere to the formatting requirements, below.

  • Word or Pages document format ONLY – NO PDFs or other file types
  • Times New Roman, 12-point font – NO other fonts or sizes
  • 1-inch margins
  • Double-spaced
  • NO title page
  • Put your name at the top of the first page of the assignment

Details & Instructions:

This assignment counts for 15% of the total course grade—10% for the creative writing portion, 5% for the literary analysis portion. There are two required elements, detailed on the following page.

  • You may consult your notes from course lectures.
  • You may consult/use assigned texts from the course.
  • NO outside, unassigned sources may be used for this assignment. That includes encyclopedias, websites, videos, artificial intelligence of any kind, or other individuals.

REQUIRED ELEMENT ONE—Creative Writing

750–1,250 words. Choose one of the stories from the list at the bottom of this page. Then, write a version of the story from the perspective of any character who is not the narrator or main character, and extend that story into the future. Put yourself into the shoes of the character you choose. How do they see the world? Do they agree with the perspective of the narrator, or do they have other motivations and biases? What are their motivations and biases? How does that influence how they behave? And, what happens next? Don’t forget to think about style—how would your new main character tell the story? The original author has built a world for you to analyze to determine possible futures – dream big!

REQUIRED ELEMENT TWO—Literary Analysis

750 words. Write an analysis of your creative writing piece. Describe why you told the story the way you did: what from the original story makes your version plausible? From what clues did you deduce your character’s motivations, thoughts, and actions? What is the “what if” of the story, and how does that track into your imagined future? Why is it written in the style and/or format that you chose? What does that contribute to your overall story?
