Module 1: Social Issue Messaging Over Time

The relationship between the hip-hop music genre, the civil rights movement, and the black freedom struggle has not always been obvious. For the most part, the elders in the civil rights movement have criticized hip-hop artists for lack of intellectual activism. Hip-hop artists have often dismissed the elders of the civil rights movement as being out of touch with contemporary problems.

Explain two ways in which hip-hop can be seen as an extension of the civil rights movement, including how and why they are connected.

Consider the following: As a “chief purveyor of public history” (Rosenstone, 2006), television and film are capable of changing our perceptions of the past including our own cultural heritage. However, these “historical” popular culture artifacts cannot escape projecting current social views in addition to past events, fact, or fiction.

The television series Downton Abbey, set in an Edwardian manor house, followed the stories of the lord and ladies living upstairs as well as the cooks, grooms, and staff working downstairs. This series was a global success. Several social issues were tackled within the show, including gender, social and economic class, and homosexuality.

Identify two examples of social conservatism within Downton Abbey and explain how they could have been written differently to portray social liberalism or social issue change. (250–300 words)

Analyze how the concept of tropicalization applies to social issue messaging related to gender, drawing examples from the resource The Exotic Other: Representations of Latina Tropicalism in U.S. Popular Culture and one other resource of your choice. Note: When you are looking for an additional resource to draw upon, you may want to research articles written about Jennifer Lopez, Sofia Vergara, Zoe Saldana, and Salma Hayek.

Choose two popular culture artifacts/expressions separated by approximately 40 years within a single popular culture category such as movies, television, or music. Then, select a single social issue. Write a brief analysis of how the chosen social issue is messaged, or portrayed, in the two artifacts you selected. Include a brief discussion of how messaging on that issue has changed over time.

Module 2: Popular Culture Responses to Historical Events

Songs have often been used to express reactions to historical events. In fact, sometimes a song will remain popular longer than society’s memory of the events that inspired it. Select either the events that inspired the song “Ohio” and the song itself, or the events that inspired the song “Strange Fruit” and the song itself, and explain why your chosen song has remained popular and continues to attract an audience even though the events might have been forgotten by some.

As a reaction to the events of 9/11, popular culture reacted to the emotional response of potential audiences. Consider what changes took place, how long they lasted, and whether the popular culture industry returned to “normal” at an appropriate time, leaving room for grief and shock to heal.

Then, imagine that you are a philosopher who looks at the world today and makes projections about society. Write a brief analysis of whether the popular culture reaction to 9/11 was appropriate, not significant enough, or too significant for the events. Provide two examples to support your reasoning.

Module 3: The Role of Popular Culture in Provoking/Resisting Social Issue Change

Popular culture can provoke or resist change related to the ways that society views social issues. In general, if you are watching or listening to a popular culture artifact/expression that makes you feel comfortable and reassured, the artifact/expression is likely to resist change and reinforce existing views. If you are uncomfortable, it is likely that the artifact/expression is pushing the boundaries of dominant views of social issues.

Decide if you believe that popular culture artifacts/expressions make the idea of same-sex marriage more acceptable or if popular culture has no influence on this issue at all. Either position is fine. Explain your position and rationale, and include at least two examples that support your thinking.

You have been studying how popular culture can be influenced by the social and economic class environment in which it is created. This is an example of the influence of social issues on popular culture. Also, you have been exploring how consuming popular culture and its portrayal of violence may not influence behavior. It seems that the relationship between popular culture and behavior, including the creation of popular culture, is a two-way street but sometimes that street is empty.

Consider the resources for this module as examples of some of the ways that popular culture influences society and society influences popular culture. Select two examples of popular culture artifacts/expressions. You may choose examples that you find or any that are discussed in this Competency. Analyze whether and how each of the artifacts/expressions that you identified influence society or whether and how society has influenced each of the artifacts/expressions and in what ways. Include supporting evidence for each
