Assignment 1 – Personal Effectiveness Plan (Nosce te ipsum)

Due Date: See course website

Description: This assignment gives you an opportunity to reflect on your experience and skills in a way that will help you to begin the process of managing people in organizations. This assignment requires you to understand how your traits as an individual influence your perception and behaviour as well as your natural strengths and weaknesses when it comes to managing people in a business setting.  A critical component of this assignment is your own assessment of your strengths and weaknesses in interpersonal situations and your action plan to improve your effectiveness.

Need answer to this question?

The following is a suggested outline for your profile report.

1. Introduction (~ 200 words): Introduce yourself and highlight the traits that are core to who you are as a person. Inform the reader of the structure of your report with a clear road map of your report. Conclude with a sentence that clearly communicates the central thesis of your report.

2. Self-assessment (~500 words): Discuss the results from your self-assessment and self-management exercises in week 2. You should organize your discussion in this section to focus on the 3-4 most relevant and interesting results (to your interpersonal skills in a business setting). It is important that you offer behavioural evidence to support why you feel these results are relevant to your own personal profile.

3. Critical skills (~500 words): In this section you should discuss the 1-2 interpersonal skills that you would like to target for improvement in this course. You should consult outside sources (quality academic sources) to help understand your selected skills (e.g. non-verbal communication, supportive leadership) and the impact that they can have on success in the workplace.

4. Action Plan (~300 words): In the final section you should develop an actionable plan for improving specific strengths (building) or weaknesses (addressing a skill gap). Your discussion should address:

  • How your personal traits and behaviours may impact your ability to develop your chosen skill (i.e. will it be a challenge or does skill development align well with your personality)
  • What role will self-awareness play in your improvement? Why?
  • What will be the payoff professionally and personally?
  • What potential obstacles stand in the way?

Specifications:

  • Accepted paper length = 1500 words. Standard formatting rules apply (you may single space, normal margins and font size)
  • Submit your .docx file (it must be in this format) on the course website
  • Please label your file properly (LastNameFIrstName – MGMT 5100 Asgnt #1 – Title of your report) and submit on our course website.
  • You may use the first-person writing style when appropriate as this is a reflection piece.

Grading Scheme: The report will be graded out of 25 marks. You will be graded on the formatting of the report, the grammar, and the content in your report. APA (7th edition) referencing style should be used for referencing.

Tips:

1. You should not discuss all of the results of your self-assessments. Focus your writing on the results that are most relevant to you as an individual and your success personally and professionally.

2. An appendix with a chart displaying your scores on all of your personal assessments must be completed and attached to your report. It is a good way to help organize your writing and to inform the reader of your traits. You will not be able to display your full results on the chart, focus on the most important results/interpretation (do not just put numbers but to use point form and acronyms). After you have completed this chart, take some time to consider your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to interpersonal skills. Use this process to develop goals for your own improvement as a manager/employee.
