Applying Self-Leadership for Personal Growth and Organizational Effectiveness

The theories and concepts taught in this course will only contribute to students’ personal and professional success if applied to everyday experiences and situations. Self-reflection journals engage students in the consistent practice of self-awareness, helping develop increased consciousness of various aspects of the Self including traits, behaviors, thoughts, and feelings.

The structure of self-reflection journals should align with that of a gap analysis through which the student: (1) gains insight into key dimensions of the Self at a given time, (2) sets challenging and specific goals that can enhance personal and professional effectiveness, and (3) fulfills the desired goals and experiences by applying self-leadership best practices and strategies. The student should conduct self-reflection in relation to the concepts covered during the time between the journals’ due dates. As part of raising their awareness of when and why they engage in specific behaviors, the student should identify key factors that lead to ineffective and unproductive behaviors (i.e., subtractive knowledge). Following the gap analysis, the student should select a current or past work scenario and briefly discuss how the information and analysis offered in the journal might have helped them and/or others manage the situation more effectively.  Each journal entry should be 2 pages (double-spaced); APA. The student can utilize the following outline to guide their reflection:

  • Describing Experience: Student provides a description of the experience, observation, activity, etc. upon which the student is reflecting.
  • Describing Response: Student provides a description of their behavior, thoughts, and emotions at the time of the experience. 
  • Critical Reflection: Student engages in self-observation to identify and examine key dimensions of the Self including factors that led to their behavior and intellectual/emotional response to the experience.
  • Self-Goal-Setting and Planning: Student defines a desired goal and provides concrete plans for further action to fulfill their goal using relevant self-leadership concepts and strategies.
  • Application: Student sheds light upon the practical dimensions of their self-leadership plan by applying it to a previous or current situation.
