Directions: In class we discussed five major divisions of biopsychology: physiological psychology, psychopharmacology, neuropsychology, psychophysiology, and cognitive neuroscience. We then went through and discussed how a researcher might approach studying memory from the perspective of each of these divisions.

What I want you to do now is pick another construct (other than memory) and explain how each sub-division might go about studying it. You might find it helpful to do a little bit of digging within each of these divisions to find some good examples of the methodologies they commonly use. If you need help thinking of a construct, please feel free to speak with your instructor for some ideas. It may also be helpful to simply browse the major chapters and content areas of the book for some guidance as well.
find an article on your particular construct that is related to one of these subdivisions. Provide a reference (APA style) and a brief synopsis of the article including:
- why they did it (usually found in the introduction section)
- how they did it (usually found in the methods section)
- who did they study (usually found in the methods section)
- what types of measures did they use (usually found in the methods section)
- and what did they find (usually found in the discussion section)
Now that you’ve summarized the articles main points, state which subdivision is best represented by the study and make sure to explain why.
Finally, take a look at the article and explain if their approach was more of a somatic or behavioral intervention. Again, make sure not only to state which intervention as present but explain why you came to this conclusion. Note that in some cases you may have BOTH pathways or several different variables being represented in the study. You don’t need to discuss every variable, but you should focus on at least one main variable in the study. Again, it is helpful here to go back to your notes and review what an experimental design is and how to determine independent (manipulated) versus dependent (outcome) variables. If you can then apply this to your study, you should be able to determine whether it is a somatic or behavioral intervention process.
