Week 4 Summative Assessment: Investigation Report
Exam Content

Hi, everyone.

This week four assessment is an investigation report.

Now, there's not quite as many steps involved in this one as the last one in week three.

But even so, you've got to read everything.

And you start off with this as a trial consultant.

Then watch the following video for an overview of this assessment.

So that stuff is more detail in what I'm telling you and then your preparation research.

At least two scholarly sources other than the textbook which provide statistical demographic information for sentencing and corrections and use the websites of your local or federal agencies to find the most recent data.

Now, it's been my experience that the local level is not as efficient or effective as the state and the federal level, but it may be different in your area.

So here's your deliverable using local or federal statistics on sentencing and corrections.

Write a 700 word Microsoft Word investigative report as if you were a trial consultant.

So in this one, you're a trial consultant investigating policies and procedures and their impact on those of diverse backgrounds.

And then it goes on to what you should do in this report and then include the following information with supportive examples from your research in your report.

Describe this, explain this, describe that, and propose at least one recommendation.

And it goes into details about what that recommendation is about.

And again, you got to cite two scholarly sources other than the textbook in your report.

So and as required when you submit this assignment, it's week four and your name.

I hope that's clear by now.

Week for your name in this example is Peat Moss.

And then here are the assessment support things that you can go through.

Here's some of the things that you are going to need to go through.

Bureau of Justice Statistics.

Bureau of Prisons.

Demographic Differences in Sentencing.

So it looks like a lot of the stuff you need is right here.

So that's a good thing.

It's all provided for you.

Anyway, good luck with this assignment.

I look forward to reading your work.

Thanks, everyone

Trial consultants conduct research related to jury profiling. They must be able to investigate statistics, build profiles of potential jurors, and report accurate data to a trial team who selects the jurors for a case. In this assessment, you research statistics and write an investigative report that explains the impact of policies and procedures on those of diverse backgrounds and makes evidence-based recommendations to a trial team who is looking to reduce disparities based on gender, race, and ethnicity in the trial process.

Welcome, this video is to help you with the week four summative assessment, the investigation report.

This week, you will need to show that you can explain the impact of policies and procedures on those of diverse backgrounds.

So in this assessment, you'll be writing a report as if you were addressing the trial team.

You'll be imagining as if you were a consultant who's explaining the disparities that you see in the sentencing and the trial process.

And this can be for different genders, races, ethnicities, for adults or juveniles at either the federal or state level.

So you have some choices to make.

This assessment is gonna give you some practice with investigation.

This skill is gonna be helpful to anyone who uses critical thinking to solve problems.

Law enforcement officers, probation officers, lots of different people conduct investigations, as do the members of trial teams and the consultants who inform these kinds of courts and other decision-making people when they're making decisions about an offender.

To succeed in this assessment, you'll wanna choose a focus group, either adults or juveniles.

And you'll also wanna choose a geographic area, either your state or the federal level.

You'll wanna use the resources provided with the assignment to research statistics on racial, ethnic, and gender disparities and sentencing at this level.

So you won't be picking just one.

You'll be looking at all three: race, ethnicity, and gender.

You'll wanna locate and cite at least two additional scholarly resources.

Please use the library.

There's no specific format for this.

You can write your report just in the order that's listed in the instructions.

As always, be sure to review the faculty feedback on prior assignments.

Use the tools in the library and the Center for Writing Excellence.

Add citations for all your sources in APA format.

Check for grammar and plagiarism issues.

And don't forget, read the rubric before you get started.

Good luck on your assignment.

Preparation
Research at least 2 scholarly sources, other than the textbook, that provide statistical demographic information for sentencing and corrections. Use the websites of your local or federal agencies to find the most recent data.

Assessment Deliverable
Using local or federal statistics on sentencing and corrections, write a 700- to 1,050-Microsoft® Word investigative report as if you were a trial consultant investigating policies and procedures and their impact on those of diverse backgrounds. Your report should explain current data regarding disparities in sentencing based on gender, race, and ethnicity, and make recommendations to the trial team about reducing these disparities in the trial process.

Include the following information, with supportive examples from your research, in your report:
Describe the gender, racial, and ethnic group demographic information for the following in your area:
Criminal sentences handed down in court
Corrections institutions (both prisons and jails)
Probation and parole populations
Explain the gender, racial, and ethnic disparities found in sentencing. Address whether there is disparity in who receives probation versus incarceration.
Describe how biases might affect courtroom proceedings, such as a bail/bond proceeding, pretrial proceeding, first appearance, and legal representation (e.g., having a private lawyer instead of a public defender).
Propose at least 1 recommendation for how to address gender disparities and at least 1 recommendation for how to address the racial and ethnic disparities in the areas discussed.

Assessment Support (Important)

Review the rubric for guidance on deliverable expectations.

If you choose the federal level, the following resources include federal data that may be helpful:
Bureau of Justice Statistics
Federal Bureau of Prisons
Demographic Differences in Sentencing from the United States Sentencing Commission

Prisoners in 2020 – Statistical Tables from the U.S. Department of Justice

Probation and Parole in the United States, 2019 from the U.S. Department of Justice

If you choose to include data on juveniles, refer to Patterns of Juvenile Court Referrals of Youth Born in 2000, a bulletin from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Justice

Programs that uses data from the National Juvenile Court Data Archive to summarize demographics of youth referred to juvenile court.

Review “Statistics 101: Proportions, Ratios, and Rates” from Statistics Canada on YouTube if you would like more information on interpreting basic statistical data.
