The book Crucial Conversations offers insights into ways of personally mastering an individual’s ability to conduct a critical negotiation, concerning any major issue, with the result of reaching some form of mutually agreeable outcome. In this assignment, you must cite 4 or more sources with one source being the text by Patterson, Grenny, and Switzler (2011).

First, select a historical or current organizational conflict requiring negotiation to resolve. Briefly describe the conflict including relevant background data and history. Second, describe how the following elements of Crucial Conversations were or are utilized to resolve the issues involved:

  1. What was the form of the dialogue between the parties? Was there any form of shared meaning developed during the conversations?
  2. How open are/were the negotiators with each other? Were there hidden agendas?
  3. Was there a sense of mutual purpose in the negotiations? How was that communicated?
  4. Was or is there a “safe” environment created?
  5. Did each side “master their own stories” in order to reduce and/or eliminate the emotions from the conversation?
  6. Was there an environment of real, open and honest communication?
  7. Was there an attempt to really understand the other party’s true feelings?
