Proposal Topic: Describe your topic.

You are a parent of a child who requires an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Conduct research to find out what an IEP is and how IEPs are used. Create a proposal on how to improve your child’s IEP.

Plan for Developing and Executing a Research Strategy

Explain 2–4 criteria that should be considered when finding credible and relevant sources to support this topic. When researching something as important as your child’s education, there are many factors that need to be considered when trying to find the right program to help them.  First and foremost, the sources that we use must have experience in this arena.  Not just experience, but proven, tried and true success with creating and facilitating effective IEPs.  The program must meet the states minimum federal requirements. Looking at current federal, state, and local websites, that list out all IEP services, laws, regulations, and requirements. One should also consider finding sources that have experience with the type of learning issues that your child has.
Explain 2–4 reasons why the information or argument in a source would not be reliable. If a source has limited experience with IEPs, I would argue that they may not be the most helpful of sources.  If a source doesn’t mention mandated requirements and processes, I would not consider using the information they provide.

Weak Sources: Identify two additional sources found during your research and use the following table to explain their weaknesses in terms of credibility, relevance, or usefulness.

Weak Source 1

Reference Citation: Identify the author, date, title, and source location, as available.WebMD, Hilary Parker, June 21, 2022, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for Autism, Online website, www.webmd.com/brain/autism/individualized-education-programs-ieps-for-autism
Explain why the source is not credible, relevant, or useful. This source is credible, but I searched “IEPs” and this specific link came up.  If my child was autistic the information would be helpful, but if my child has any other diagnosis, the information would be irrelevant.

Weak Source 2

Reference Citation: Identify the author, date, title, and source location, as available.JustAnswer, JD Ray, attorney, Feb. 20, 2024, IEP Lawyer Chat, Online website, www.justanswer.com/sip/education/iep
Explain why the source is not credible, relevant, or useful.I again searched for “IEPs” and this website link came up.  If I had a legal question this could possibly work but who really knows if the information you are receiving is from a board-certified attorney?
