In this writing assignment, a national advocacy group has sought out an expert on political behavior to help solve a seemingly impossible problem. They want you to propose solutions to the lack of public engagement in American politics. They seek ways to increase a wide variety of forms of engagement, from knowledge about politics, to voting in elections, to participating in more involved forms of political expression, like writing to Congressional representatives, participating in demonstrations, attending campaign events, running for office, and other activities.

In your paper, address at least three forms of political engagement. For each behavior, propose a method to increase participation/engagement among the American public. Your solutions could involve changing laws or parts of the Constitution. They could also involve new laws, policies, or outreach efforts by state or national governments, the private sector, or political campaigns.

In each case, explain whether you think your proposed method will easily produce the intended results, or whether the effects might be smaller than anticipated due to your knowledge of the rational, psychological, and social aspects of political behavior and public opinion. Thoroughly explain your position by discussing the course material.

Instructions

Reflective writing assignments are expected to be 3-5 pages in length. They are not five-paragraph essays. While I ask that you use paragraph breaks, good grammar, and structured formatting, the organization of the paper is completely up to you. Grading will be performed on the basis of criteria in the Rubric (see the Blackboard site).
