10 Project Management Knowledge Areas

The purpose of the discussion forum is for you to engage in critical thinking through an open exchange of ideas among your classmates. It is not a test. There is not an expected correct answer. Your posting should be original thought based on your review of this week’s literature and your additional research, and should be written in your own words. Supporting references (outside of those provided in the course) are often appropriate and highly encouraged. However, your directly applicable personal and professional knowledge and experience in concert with your research (i.e., not loosely related stories, etc.) regarding course content can also be beneficial to the learning process.

This week’s readings and videos provide a lot of information about what Project Management is as well as an introduction into the topic of Knowledge Areas. These resources have been intentionally selected to get you thinking about these topics…and then to do a bit of research of your own. PMI is a professional non-profit entity that sets standard for the field of Project Management. However, many organizations approach project management in slightly to very different ways. Use the PMI database or other scholarly source-finding method to research a few articles for yourself on the topic. Then, complete the discussion assignment:

For this assignment, referring specifically to the 10 PMI Project Management Knowledge Areas, post a discussion entry that provides your opinion of how necessary all 10 of the PMI Project Management Knowledge Areas are to project success. What did you find and what are your thoughts about the integrated nature of the 10 knowledge areas? Are there any you would remove/add/combine/modify, etc., and explain your reasoning for why/why not?

NOTE: Don’t just simply provide definitions and information already covered and provided to you within this module – your classmates have access to the same information. Imagine you are in class together; would you turn to your classmate and tell them what project management knowledge areas are? They would likely reply…”um, yeah, I can read the slides and hear the professor, too.” Rather, provide your ideas, critical thinking, and analysis. Enter into a discussion.
