FINAL GRADE72/100GENERAL COMMENTSInstructorFeed Forward Targets:I am pleased to see these included in the cover page and clearly indicating how you have addressed them throughout the assignment. It is evident that you have made progress in ensuring the points have been addressed, incorporating the specific elements in the text and showing improved evaluation.A Critical Consideration of an Early Years’ Curriculum:

  • The curriculum you are currently using has been chosen to be evaluated, along with clear comparisons to international curricula too. It is clear from the text that you are familiar with a range of curricula and are able to support points raised when comparing or contrasting the documents with in text referencing used.A clear definition of what should be included within an early years curriculum is clearly evident within the text with some of the components identified and extended to show some pertinent issues within EY’s.

  • Comparison to the EYFS is included throughout, along with consideration given to cultural contexts in relation to how some of the frameworks are developed in line with the needs of the community.
  • There are some interesting factors considered in relation to the cultural context and wider influences that may impact on some of the key components of the early years curriculum. There are some specific theories considered and there is scope to continue developing these ideas in the next assignment, where the evaluations can be extended and not as restricted due to the word count.Pedagogical approaches are included in relation to a classic learning and development theory, which could be developed more in relation to contemporary literature and relate to the factors identified in current research. For example, sustained shared thinking is an essential component of effective practice, but provision can only be as effective as the practitioner engaging in this. If they are limited in experience and have not had mentor support or training, it would be difficult to implement this theory effectively.

  • Quality of Written Communication:The text is very well written and some highly relevant points are captured. There is evidence of an opinion being formed with your own interpretation of specific discourse. This has potential to continue being explored, but it is important to avoid overly emotive writing in the text.Feed Forward Targets:
  • Read more widely, particularly academic journals to allow for a range of perspectives to be understood and to allow for extension and further development of the key points being raised. When referencing to key documents try to cite the document itself along with the article discussing it to demonstrate understanding.A concluding paragraph was evident and it was good to see this included, in future try to summarise the key points raised bringing the assignment to a close and avoid becoming overly emotive in the text.

  • Moderator’s Comments:A critically evaluated well written assignment, demonstrating a clear understanding of the curriculum. There are strengths and limitations addressed as well as consideration of the factors that influence the curriculum. The assignment addresses all relevant criteria and shows an in depth understanding of the aspects being considered, with a wide range of sources referenced throughout to support points being raised and strengthen the discussion.Grade Agreed(Emma Little)

Comment 1This is a good, clear and succinct introduction with pertinent points raised.Comment 2When including the framework, it would be best to cite the source directly rather than where it has been discussed.Comment 3This is a really good point here – to demonstrate understanding further the specific contemporary theories could be included as in text reference.GoodGood point being raised.Additional CommentA crucial element!Comment 4Certainly yes – this also links with the inclusion of key workers guidance in the framework.Comment 5This is a good emerging point that has scope to be developed over the next assignment in relation to quality and consistency – are all practitioners capable and aware of this to implement effectively?Comment 6Why does it NEED to be balanced – again, this has potential to be explored further.Comment 7Some very good considerations here, looking at all perspectives. Try to look at more recent empirical research around this and think about why it could be difficult to gather such data on children’s learning (in relation to ethical considerations).   Comment 8Good to see comparison against another curriculum here. For some practitioners who might not be as confident in planning, the more structured guidance could be beneficial. However, caution needs to be exercised as children are individuals so a level of individualised learning should also be included.

Comment 9Certainly yes – but you need efficient, responsive practitioners for this.Comment 10Look to include in text reference to Malaguzzi to show understanding of the Reggio approach, rather than using Scottish guidance.Comment 11Extend the point being made here – would it be ‘easy’ to adopt this approach given that it is so community specific and what are the wider cultural implications of trying to use it in say, Hong Kong?GoodGood point being raised.Additional CommentExtending from the previous point made.Comment 12Is this similar to the characteristics of effective learning in the EYFS?Comment 13Good, comparing and contrasting with what has been discussed. Remember citations for all theory / curricula mentioned.Comment 14Been acknowledged by who? Look for academic journals that might capture some of this thinking to support your argument further.Comment 15It could also be due to the need to gather quantifiable information / data for the Government in the UK – they cannot measure the success of play as easily as ‘scores’ from the ELG’s. It increases theaccountability placed upon teachers, removing their autonomy and professionalism.GoodGood point being raised.   Comment 16I like that you are forming a clear opinion about this and it will drive your practice, but when presenting findings from literature try to express without using emotive text that could show bias.

Comment 17This is interesting and shows a real understanding of what the setting adopts, why and how it suits the needs of the community. Using colloquial language is not advised, but continue to present the evidence in a factual manner.Citation NeededCite Source:Please use the link below to find links to information regarding specific citation styles: http://www.plagiarism.org/plag_article_citation_styles.htmlComment 18It would have been beneficial to explore this more in the main text to indicate why and how this is the ‘better’ option.Good consideration here as to why it could meet the needs of the children within the specific context.PAGE 5PAGE 6
