COMPETENCIES

The learner analyzes how music shapes and is shaped by diverse cultures and perspectives.

INTRODUCTION

In this task, you will write an analysis of one artist from a specific genre. You will choose one genre from the list of accepted genres provided in the “Task 3 List of Works” in the Web Links section, and you will discuss one artist from the list that typifies that genre.

Note: The work you choose must be selected from the list in the supporting document.

REQUIREMENTS

Your submission must be your original work. No more than a combined total of 30% of the submission and no more than a 10% match to any one individual source can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. The similarity report that is provided when you submit your task can be used as a guide.

You must use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission because it provides detailed criteria that will be used to evaluate your work. Each requirement below may be evaluated by more than one rubric aspect. The rubric aspect titles may contain hyperlinks to relevant portions of the course.

Tasks may not be submitted as cloud links, such as links to Google Docs, Google Slides, OneDrive, etc., unless specified in the task requirements. All other submissions must be file types that are uploaded and submitted as attachments (e.g., .docx, .pdf, .ppt).

Helpful tips:

  1. Each task roughly corresponds to the sections in the course. Task 3 relates to the information in section 3 of the course, for example.
    • Task One contains 7 content instructions.
    • Task Two contains 4 content questions.
    • Task Three contains 3 content questions.
    • I encourage starting with Task 3 and working backward; 3, 2, 1. 😊 For Task 3, pick your favorite music from the required list; Afrobeat, Fado, Bossa Nova, Rock, Funk, or Native American. The required lists are located at the bottom of the rubric for each Task.
  1. Use simple headings to format your papers. Suggested formats are attached to this email.
    • Use the headings A1, A2, etc., to help the Evaluator clearly understand each and all instructions have been addressed.
    • Please note the paper formats do not include introductory or concluding paragraphs because the Tasks are not essays or research papers.
    • Please provide 1 or 2 short paragraph responses for each instruction. There is not a minimum word or page count requirement.
  1. Additional research will be required for several instructions and to assist with informed viewpoints.
    • At least one source is required for each work.
    • A source requires two citations; an in-text and a reference.
    • Formats are provided at this link  Quick Citation Guide  and in the files attached to this email.
  1. The Tasks are informal analyses and not essays or research papers.
    • There is no need to take notes while reading the course textbook. The course textbook will help to provide an informed point of view.
    • When answering the Task questions, write as if you are explaining the idea to a younger person. Please do not assume your audience is familiar with the topic. Use your knowledge gained about the topic and communicate your understanding of the topic with words that you use during casual conversation. Try to avoid elevating the language by using quotes and closely paraphrasing other sources.

The submission includes in-text citations for sources that are quoted, paraphrased, or summarized and a reference list; however, the citations or reference list is incomplete or inaccurate.
